Who We Are
We started off this week by exploring what we look like! After collecting natural materials from around the school, we created self portraits by looking in the mirror. The children are so creative! We also started tuning into one line of inquiry: your abilities. We created an "Ask an Expert" board by making posters about our abilities, and what we are experts at! It's so interesting to hear from the children's perspectives what they feel they are experts at, and I agree with all of them! This integrates nicely with our literacy as we looked at how we develop ideas in our writing by choosing topics we know a lot about! When we did our writing, we looked at our expert board for ideas! Math - Measurement What a week back! We have done so many "tuning in" activities to find out what we already know! I asked the children some key questions and recorded their answers: - What can you measure? - What do you measure with? - When do you measure? Then we took turns measuring ourselves! We counted how many popsicle sticks tall we are working in partners. Happy Halloween!

Unit of Inquiry To reflect upon and wrap up our final week for this Unit of Inquiry we created "School, School, What Do You See?" books inspired by the classic book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? by Bill Martin, Jr. This helped us to reflect on our first line of inquiry: What our community is like. Everybody also had a final Show and Tell where they developed their communication skills by listening and speaking when presenting a safe system they experienced in Singapore. This helped us to reflect on our other lines of inquiry: how systems work and factors that affect systems. The children were so proud to share pictures, reports and personal artefacts relating to health and safety in Singapore! Literacy This week we also used shaving foam to practice writing our words after our word sorts. The children were so excited to use shaving foam they sorted their words in record time! And of course... Some fun free play with shaving foam! Math This week we developed some social skills during math by playing collaborative math games! We had so much fun playing, taking turns and developing our number sense skills. Movement Course This Friday high school students did service projects around the school and four students volunteered to create a movement course for Kindergarten in their outdoor play area! There are so many different ways to play with this course while developing our gross motor skills and crossing the midline path! We had so much fun!
UOI - Safety Systems in our Community There are a lot of new systems that have been developed to keep us safe and healthy in Singapore! This week we explored the ones we have in place at school. The children waited on the 1m marked lines, took their temperature and spotted all the signage in the school that reminds us how to stay safe and healthy! We also explored and made our own grocery store named "Kindy Food and more!" The children marked out the lines on the floor to make sure we are 1m apart when waiting in queue, they took temperature and fake "safe entry" scanned into the shop! The children also helped to create signage for our grocery store reminding everyone how to follow all the safety systems! What a fun and practical way to develop our conceptual understanding of systems in our community, our literacy skills by writing posters and our mathematics skills when counting and using money to buy the groceries! Math - Maps and more! We continued to play with maps this week, creating our own using different keys and talking about our communities we created!
Unit of Inquiry - The Canteen
After this we looked at our central idea again: Systems are developed to meet the needs of our community. We explored what some of our basic needs are, and what we have at school to help meet those needs! We spoke about food and identified that while we mostly bring packed lunches, there is a canteen that feeds other students and teachers. We developed our research skills by asking questions and recording our findings when we interviewed Mr Shen who told us all about the canteen. The next day we explored the canteen's system (things that work together) through the key concept of connection, to see what parts are connected and work together to bring food into our bellies! Developing research skills Key concept: connection Math As we continue to develop our number skills throughout the year, we also started to explore maps and directions. This week we dissected parts of maps and looked at maps we recognise from our personal experiences! These were maps from the Singapore Zoo, Universal Studios, Gardens by the Bay... etc! Then we started to look at symbols and made our own classroom using symbols on a map. Mid Autumn Festival This week was full of celebrations about Mid Autumn Festival! Ms Sharon, our Primary School Secretary, came in and spoke to us about her experiences and how she celebrates Mid Autumn Festival, then she played a fun game with us outside! Next, high school students told us about how they celebrate the festival and helped us make Lanterns for our Lantern Parade. On Thursday we dressed up in festive outfits and colours and participated in the Lantern Parade. Our Kindergarten class was so creative and passionate during the Lantern Parade, we even won an award!! What exciting times in our class this week, well done everyone! Lantern Making Lantern Parade
